By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

Supported each year by individuals, communities, and various organizations all over the world, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.

“Share Facts On Drugs, Save Lives” The theme of the 2021 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking aims at combating misinformation and promotes sharing the facts on drugs — from health risks and solutions to tackle the world drug problem, to evidence-based prevention, treatment, and care.

COVID-19 has brought unprecedented public awareness on health, protective measures for staying healthy, and most importantly, and on protecting each other. A growing sense of global community and solidarity continues to emerge, as does the need to ensure health care for all.

Unless we reduce demand for illicit drugs, we can never fully tackle cultivation, production or trafficking. Substance abuse and the illicit trafficking of drugs is an evil in our society and disorientation among a majority of the youth. Drug trafficking is an industry working generally on a vicious cycle of manufactured demand and then supply. In view of the growing menace and the deterioration of the quality of life the General Assembly at the United Nations, in December 1987 designated 26th June to be celebrated with effect as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This resolution also recommended further action to be undertaken with regard to the report and conclusions of the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The day as an event is celebrated worldwide with much conscious fervor to make people aware and emphasize the hazards of drug addiction and illegal trafficking. A problem which is a major deterrent to humanity and a poison to the well-being of the youth in particular poses greater problems to the socio-economic and political stability of a nation as also disturbing the sustainable development of a nation.

On International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking 2020, which is marked on June 26 every year, we take a look at few reasons why not to do drugs.

Once you start taking drugs, it becomes a habit that is not going to disappear anytime soon. Your body will crave it and it will disrupt the biological processes of the body, especially your brain. Most drug addicts can not function without taking drugs, and the only way is to get medical help.

The person loses all sense of self, and depends on drugs for every function he or she has to perform.

Drugs are expensive, and once a person gets into the habit of using drugs, he or she will require more of it. It is not a cheap habit to support, and all the person’s money will go into getting the next fix. The person will resort to criminal activities or look for a cheaper drug that might end up killing him or her.

Drugs are never good. Drug Addicts also suffer health problems because they do not take care of themselves like eat a proper diet, exercise and have proper rest. It fully destroys the Health

The sense organs stop working functionally. Vision and eyesight gradually lost create impairment.  Fatal Accidents often occurred.

A person found with drugs can be arrested for possession, which shows the worst part would be having to live a future with a criminal record.

A person who takes drugs tends to make mistakes more often and becomes careless about what he or she does. Drugs kill a person’s ability to have ambition and so he or she ends up not feeling like doing anything. Addiction destroys the potentiality.

The personal relationship breaks out into pieces. Drugs can change the nature of a person in a minute and for the worse. The addict no longer lives in a world that his or her family exists in, and he or she changes so much that family and friends no longer are able to understand the person.

Every addict faces the constant threat of overdose. Addicts are always looking for a new high, and when they do that, they end up suffering from an overdose. They finally lose their life.

These are the few basic points which I hope make people stay as far away from drugs as it is possible to. Nobody has ever benefited from using drugs except perhaps the people selling them. So the best way to avoid falling into any of the mess above is to avoid drugs altogether.
