There
are books which are really no books at all, and to read which is more waste of
time, while there are others so bad that we cannot read them without great
harm. It is no doubt good to be warned against temptations and dangers of life;
but anything that familiarizes us with evil is in itself an evil. So also,
there are others which one can read without being the better of them. By useful
literature we do not mean only what will help a man in his business or
profession. That is useful no doubt, but by no means the highest use of books.
The best books raise us into a region of selfless thought where the troubles
and anxieties of the world are almost forgotten.
Answer: Good Books and Bad Books
Books may
be good or bad. Some books are so bad that it only waste time but also do great
harm. Some books may however intend to warn against the evils, but they
indirectly introduce the evils. But mere helping in business or profession is
not the soul characteristic of a good literature. The best books raise the
level of selfless thoughts.

Kaziranga National Park
ii.

Answer: (i)
KAZIRANGA
NATIONAL PARK
Kaziranga National Park is one of the biggest parks in
India. The Park lies partly in the Golaghat District and partly in Nagaon
District of Assam. This park is known to be one of the oldest parks in Assam.
The Kaziranga National Park covers a vast area along the river Brahmaputra on
the North and the Karbi Anglong Hills on the South. Kaziranga National Park is
declared as the World Heritage Site as it is the largest habitat of One Horned
Rhinoceros. Earlier it was reserved forest, but in 1974 it was declared as a
National Park.
There are many species
of Flora and Fauna found in the park. Kaziranga is the habitat of the world’s
largest number of Rhinos and Elephants. Apart from that, different kinds of
Deer, Buffalos, Tigers, and Birds can be found in the Kaziranga National Park.
Many migratory birds visit the park in different seasons.
Annual Flood is a
major problem for the park. Every year flood causes a lot of harm to the
animals of the park. It is a pride of our country and thus it is very much
necessary to conserve the Wildlife of Kaziranga National Park.
During
the monsoon season, the water of Brahmaputra River floods the Kaziranga
National Park and it becomes inaccessible for visitors during that season. From
October last onwards, it is made open for the local public and Tourists and
October to April is the best time to visit this park.
Kaziranga
National Park is the name to exemplify the most popular conservation efforts to
save the endangered species like one-horned rhinoceros in India. Located in the
Golaghat and Nagaon district of Assam, this most notable wildlife sanctuary is
being declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 1985. The park
resides at an edge of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot and this could
be the perfect reason to envision high degrees of diversified species with
great visibility.
The park
lies in the flood plains of Brahmaputra River and so every year the region is
completely drenched with high water level; so do the wildlife gets affected by
it too. And keeping such messy situation in mind, the park officials are always
ready for every kind of provision for the safety of the jungle beings of
Kaziranga.
Lying
between the latitudes of 26°30' N and 26°45' N, and longitudes 93°08' E to
93°36' E within two districts of Assam, Golaghat and Nagaon, the Kaziranga
National Park is stretched across an area of 378 sq km with an addition of 429
sq km along the present boundary of the park. The land of Kaziranga is made
fertile with the alluvial soil formed by the erosion and the silt deposition of
Brahmaputra River to make it more eligible for agriculture at the outskirts of
the park area.

JOURNEY BY BUS
A journey by bus is dull and boring. Once we occupy a
seat, we remain stationery there till we reach on destination. We cannot move
freely in a bus. Heat in the summer and cold in winter make the journey
troublesome and unbearable.
I seldom travel by bus, but this summer I had to
travel by bus to Manali since the entire family was going on a summer vacation
by bus. Our luggage was loaded on the roof of the bus and I managed to get a
window seat, much to the envy of my cousins.
We left at 6 O’clock in the morning. The weather was
quite pleasant. Sunshine was filtering in through the windows on the other side
of the bus, so my side was quite cool. Cool breeze was blowing and it was very
refreshing. All family members started chatting although a few elders tried to
catch some sleep since everyone had woken up quite early.
We had packed sandwiches and cold drinks which we had
for breakfast in the moving bus itself. It was a lot of fun since everyone had
to pass the eatables to and fro in the bus. I was carrying story books,
magazine and the morning newspaper with me. First I read the newspaper to catch
up with the latest developments and then went through magazine for some time.
It was lunch time and we decided to stop at the roadside
Dhaba in one of the villages of Punjab. The food was very delicious and
different from what we eat at home. Everyone stretched their tired limbs and
some people even lay down on the cots for some time.
After lunch it became quit hot. I drew the curtain at
the window and decided to sleep for some time. With a full stomach and rocking
bus, I full asleep within a couple of minutes. When I woke up I could not
believe my eyes. The bus was negotiating steep curves and I realized that we
had entered the hills. Tall trees cast their shadow on the road and very fresh
wind livened everyone up. The children started singing songs and the elders
joined by clapping vigorously. It was getting chilly and we took out light
woolen to cover ourselves. We refreshed ourselves with hot tea and started to
enjoy the lovely scenery.
We could see terraced forms, small streams of water
and waterfalls running down the mountainside and the local hill people cheered
whenever they saw our bus. There were apple orchards, plum trees and tall
chinar trees. It was like a dream come true and was just like the story books
that we had read. As dusk started to fall, the conductor announced that we had
reached out destination.
One didn’t know how time flew and this bus journey was
very different from the usual dull and loving journeys. I will remember this
bus journey all my life.

(a) Write a letter to the Editor of a local English newspaper
about frequent load shedding in the evening in your locality. (Mark=5)
Answer:
To,
The Editor
The Assam Tribune
Dated: 20th Jan, 2021
Sub: Frequent Load shedding / Power cut in our locality.
Respected Sir,
Through this column of your esteemed
daily I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authority towards a
serious issue faced by our locality. Our locality has been suffering from
irregular power supply and the concerned authority is in sleeping mode ignoring
importances.
Electricity is the driving fuel of the
world and one cannot dream a single moment without electricity. But our
locality has been regrettably experiencing unsteady and interrupting power
supply for almost four months now. The side effects are quite precarious.
Towards the evening the power cut shades darkness in our area boasting the
courage of the anti-social elements. As the street lights also go out due to
power cut, the roads become prone to accidents. The students are the worst
sufferers. They have to light kerosene lamps or candlesticks to finish up their
studies. As the HSLC and HS final examination are going on, the candidates are
suffering a lot. Even during day hours, the erratic power supply has caused
many problems like they cannot fill their water tanks, charge their mobile
phones, unable to use home appliances etc.
In spite of our continuous
approach to the Electricity Board, the authority has not taken any action even
intentionally replying with shortages of supply. The authority must replace the
old transformer with a new one. They must ensure steady power supply in our
locality or the APDCL must be responsible for any evils caused by this
irregular power supply.
Yours Faithfully

work before other men have got out of bed. Early in the morning the mind is
fresh and no sounds or noise disturb our attention. The work done at that time
is generally well done. Also, one finds time to take some exercise in the fresh
morning air. Exercise supplies him with a good deal of energy that enables him
to work hard until the evening. By beginning so early, he knows that he has
plenty of time to do his work thoroughly. He does not have to hurry over any
part of his work. He gets to sleep long before midnight. At that time sleep is

(c) Read the following extract carefully and answer the
questions that follow:
Over many days and months Valli listened
carefully to conversations between her neighbours
and people who regularly used the bus, and she also asked a
few discreet questions here and there. This way
she picked up various small details about
the bus journey. The town was six miles from her village. The fare was thirty
paise one way — “which is almost nothing at all,” she heard one well-dressed
man say, but to Valli, who scarcely saw that much money
from one month to the next, it seemed a fortune. The trip to the town took
forty-five minutes. On reaching town, if she stayed in her seat and paid
another thirty paise, she could return home on
the same bus. This meant that she could take the
one-o’clock afternoon bus, reach the town
at one forty-five, and be back home
by about two forty-five...On and on
went her thoughts as she calculated and
recalculated, planned and re planned.
i. What did Valli find out about the bus journey? How did she
find out these details? (Mark=1+2=3)
Answer: Valli found out every detail of the bus
journey. The bus used to travel to a town which was six miles from the village
and took thirty paise in one round. The trip took forty five minutes to the
town.
Valli found out the details by asking a few
discrete questions here and there to those who had already travelled on the
bus.
ii. What do you think Valli was planning to
do? (Mark=2)
Answer: Valli was planning to have a bus journey
secretly.
